S.E.L.F. Kits: Bringing Emotional Wellness Home, One Kit at a Time
🌱 S.E.L.F. Kits: Bringing Emotional Wellness Home, One Kit at a Time
When I recently visited the Medina Library, I discovered something incredible: SELF Kits, short for Social Emotional Learning for Families.
Each kit includes:
-
Five carefully curated children’s books
-
A laminated activity booklet filled with printables and worksheets
-
Guided lessons on emotional management, empathy, setting boundaries, communication, growth mindset, and calmness.
And here’s the best part, they’re free to check out.
It’s such a beautiful, innovative way to give families tools for emotional growth right where they already gather — the library. I left wishing every library in America had this program.
đź’ˇ What Are S.E.L.F. Kits?
S.E.L.F. Kits (Social Emotional Learning for Families) are themed bundles designed to help parents and children explore big feelings and life skills together in a simple, engaging way. Each kit uses story-driven learning, pairing social emotional books with interactive family activities that make emotional education fun and accessible.
Each activity guide includes discussion questions, printable worksheets, and “real-life practice” pages where kids apply what they learn in everyday situations.
📊 Why These Kits Matter More Than Ever
Childhood mental health is in crisis — and access to early emotional education has never been more urgent.
According to the CDC (2023):
-
1 in 5 children in the U.S. now struggles with a diagnosable mental health disorder.
-
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10–14.
-
Over 60% of children with mental health conditions receive no treatment at all — often because of stigma, cost, or lack of access to care.
Libraries can change that.
By offering S.E.L.F. Kits, libraries become gateways to early intervention — equipping parents with the same evidence-based tools used in schools and therapy sessions, in a way that’s approachable, affordable, and stigma-free.
Families can learn how to:
-
Recognize and name emotions
-
Build empathy and self-regulation skills
-
Practice gratitude, patience, and confidence
-
Strengthen communication and connection at home
